A Life of Service

Quote: There is a lesson to be learned from generations who have served ... It's the lesson that in America, each of us is free to seek our own dreams, but we must also serve a common purpose, a higher purpose. When you choose to serve - whether it's your nation, your community, or simply your neighbor - you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That is why this is a great nation. Because time and again, Americans have been willing to serve on stages both great and small; to draw on the same spirit that launched America's improbable journey to meet the challenges of each defining moment in our history.

Thoughts to Spark Conversation:
Is there a fundamental conflict between pursuing your own dreams and wanting to serve a higher purpose?

Should life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness be our primary goal as we take on a life of service.

How does Obama's call mesh with the Christian life?

Dreams and the American Dream

1)I think pursuing your own dreams can serve a higher purpose. After all, even the business man who is in business solely to make money is benefiting people if he is providing a needed service or product. For the Christian (and now as Obama is arguing American) we should recognize that our dreams can serve a higher purpose. For the Christian it is service to others from the love that God first gave us. For the American it is for the country.

2) I'd like to throw out another question: Who or how should we define "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"?

3) I think it can mesh with the Christian life; it is taken purely in the left hand kingdom (civil realm). Obama is placing motives for people to serve; such as the 100 hours of service in College gets you a scholarship/grant. I think this is a call for Christians too because we need to be in the community shaping it with our own service. Too many Christians think...Ok I'm saved I don't have to do anything (not just for salvation but I'm not going to do anything period!)
